Modeled 2026 estimates by size, finish, and plumbing scope — instant range, no email required.

A walk-in shower costs $5,000–$15,000 installed for most homes in 2026: prefab inserts run $4,500–$10,000, tiled custom builds $10,000–$15,000, and luxury curbless designs $15,000–$25,000+. Your final price depends on shower size, finish level, and whether the drain has to move.

What moves the price most

  • Shower size. Going from 24 to 60 sq ft nearly doubles the labor hours on a tiled build, while the per-square-foot price drops as fixed costs spread out.
  • Insert vs. tile. Prefab kits save on labor but lock you to standard openings; tile fits any footprint but runs 55%+ of the budget in labor.
  • Drain & plumbing moves. Relocating the drain is the biggest hidden variable — about $2,500 per move before the new shower is even bought.
  • Glass & accessibility. Upgrading to frameless glass adds $800–$2,000; a curbless entry needs the floor sunken, adding $1,500–$3,000.
  • Regional labor rates. The same build runs from −10% in the Midwest to +18% in the Northeast.

Prefab insert swap1–2 days
Tiled walk-in4–7 days
Luxury curbless1.5–2.5 weeks

Four ways to spend less

  • Choose a prefab kit sized to a standard opening — custom glass is the premium line item.
  • Do the demo and haul-away yourself; contractors charge $500–$900 for it.
  • If you go custom, watch the shower pan — it's the most-marked-up component.
  • Skip bundled add-ons (body sprays, steam); they're the most common regret upgrade.
FAQ

Walk-in shower cost questions

How much does a walk-in shower cost in 2026?

$5,000–$15,000 installed for most homes. Prefab inserts run $4,500–$10,000, tiled custom builds $10,000–$15,000, and luxury curbless designs $15,000–$25,000+. A typical 36 sq ft prefab project lands near $8,500.

How much does a tub-to-shower conversion cost?

Add about $1,200 to the same-size shower price for demo and rough-in adjustments. A 36 sq ft prefab conversion comes to roughly $5,970–$8,280 installed at baseline model rates.

Is a walk-in shower cheaper than a bathtub?

In this model, a basic bathtub replacement is usually less expensive than a new walk-in shower. A prefab shower generally costs less than a custom tiled shower. Compare the same demolition, waterproofing, plumbing and finish scope; specialty tubs can cost more.

How long does it take to install?

Prefab swaps take 1–2 days. Tiled builds need 4–7 days including waterproofing cure time. Luxury curbless projects run 1.5–2.5 weeks once custom glass is factored in.

Do I need a permit?

Most jurisdictions require one when plumbing or structure changes — $100–$500, usually pulled by your contractor. A like-for-like prefab swap often doesn't need one.

Prefab or tiled — which is worth it?

Rentals and quick resales favor prefab: low cost, fast install. Owner-occupied homes staying 10+ years usually recoup the tiled build's premium in durability and daily use.

Data

How we price these estimates

Midpoint = fixed setup + shower area × installed rate + selected options, then multiplied by the regional factor. Prefab: $1,500 + $120/sq ft; tiled: $3,000 + $240/sq ft; luxury: $5,500 + $320/sq ft. A tub conversion adds $1,200 for additional demolition and rough-in adjustments; relocating the drain adds $2,500.

These are BathCalc model assumptions, not a survey of contractor bids. The range is 85%–118% of the midpoint, rounded to the nearest $10; it is a planning allowance, not a statistical confidence interval. Regional factors are baseline 1.00, Northeast 1.18, West 1.12, South 0.92 and Midwest 0.90; they do not replace ZIP-code quotes.
